Interactions of oral strains of Candida albicans and lactobacilli.

چکیده
The increased incidence of candida infections since the advent of antibiotic therapy is well known (Wolfson, 1949; Finland, 1951; Keefer, 1951; Woods et al., 1951; i'vIcVay and Sprunt, 1951; Editorial, J.A.M.A., 1951). We have found a rise also, over the past five years, in the incidence of Candida albicans in the mouths of healthy young adults. Using the same methods of sampling as in a previous study, (Young et al., 1951) and a comparable college-student group as subjects, we have seen the percentage of candidapositive individuals in the test population rise from 48.6 to 62.1, while the quantity of yeasts in the saliva increased even more drastically (table 1). Since about 86 per cent of these persons are also carriers of oral lactobacilli, the two organisms commonly coexist in the healthy mouth. The present study was undertaken to determine what effects they might exert on each other, and whether a change in their relationship might be involved in the increase in oral candidas.

Growth inhibition of oral mutans streptococci and candida by commercial probiotic lactobacilli - an in vitro study
BACKGROUND Probiotic bacteria are suggested to play a role in the maintenance of oral health. Such health promoting bacteria are added to different commercial probiotic products. The aim of the study was to investigate the ability of a selection of lactobacilli strains, used in commercially available probiotic products, to inhibit growth of oral mutans streptococci and C. albicans in vitro. M...

Background: Infectious diseases such as tooth decay are a challenge to oral health in humans.Mouthwashes arean auxiliary tool and in addition to this, mechanical dental plaque control i.e. brushing and flossing, play an important role in controlling plaque. In the past three decades, the pharmaceutical industry has produced a significant number of antibiotics, but the resistance of microorganis...
متن کاملProbiotic Lactobacillus reuteri has antifungal effects on oral Candida species in vitro
Background: An alternative approach for managing Candida infections in the oral cavity by modulating the oral microbiota with probiotic bacteria has been proposed. Objective: The aim was to investigate the antifungal potential of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289) against six oral Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. tropicalis, C. du...
متن کاملAcid production by oral strains of Candida albicans and lactobacilli.
Both Candida albicans and lactobacilli are common colonizers of carious lesions in children and adolescents. The purpose of this study is to compare the velocity of acid production between C. albicans and several Lactobacillus species at different pH levels and concentrations of glucose. Washed, pure resting-cell suspensions were obtained by culturing a total of 28 oral isolates comprising the ...
متن کاملLipase Gene Expression of Resistant and Sensitive Candida Albicans to Fluconazole Isolated from Patients Suffering from Oral Candidiasis and Vaginal Candidiasis
Abstract Background and Objective: With the development of drug resistance in strains of fungi, there is a considerable resistance of Candida albicans strains to fluconazole. Molecular studies are developing to determine the relationship of such a drug resistance with the increased gene expression of enzymes produced in drug-resistant Candida isolates. We aimed to evaluate the relationship betw...
